The Rains of Castamere – Game of Thrones

The Rains of Castamere (A Song Of Ice And Fire/Game of Thrones)
Posting this is much easier than trying to explain what “Filk” is to people
I mean, as soon as I hear they were making a show of ASOIAF I was like, “OMG There going to be so much filk they’ll have to write”
It’s impossible to explain what Filk is to people who don’t read fantasy.
The Rains of Castamere was (in the books) a song commissioned by Tywin Lannister to commemorate the utter annihilation of some family that rose up against house Lannister a few decades before the events in ASOIAF. So basically, in order for it to be in the show they have to hire musicians to make it a real song.

For we will be wicked and we will be fair
And they'll call us such names, and we really won't care,
So go, tell your Wendys, your Susans, your Janes,
There's a place they can go if they're tired of chains,
And our roads may be golden, or broken, or lost,
But we'll walk on them willingly, knowing the cost -
We won't take our place on the shelves.
It's better to fly and it's better to die
Say the wicked girls saving ourselves.

Best Game Ever (A Different D&D Song) – Mikey Mason

Also: I was contacted by Gary Gygax’s family regarding this song. Learn more here:

I was inspired to write this song after watching Allie Goertz’s very charming, very sweet (slightly psychotically violent in the middle) song “Tonight (D&D Song).”
Its a great, wistful tune, and she has a beautiful voice.
I’m sorry that this isn’t, and that I don’t. While I love rpgs, and have since I was a kid, this is more like the D&D sessions we had when I was younger. That doesn’t mean I didn’t (r don’t) feel the same way Allie does about a good rpg session. It probably (I hope) speaks to the quality of the games we ran when I was younger…
Every group has its George. If your group doesn’t, you’re probably him (or her.)
Enjoy!

One of the songs performed at last night’s Nerd-Vana’s Merry Freakin’ FILK-smas show!

5 Years – Tom Smith

merripestin:

5 Years (Babylon 5) by Tom Smith
Hot like Ivanova and Talia,
we’re gonna Draal ya,
and then we’ll kick a little Zathras.
Yesterday all the Narns were freed
but there’s still something keeping hold on Centauri.
We’ll get a room on Z’ha’dum,
the ship’ll zoom and then go BOOM (shakalaka)
‘cos there’s always one tomorrow.

quirkydetectives:

So I wrote a Hey There Delilah filk for Doctor Who, and this awesome, awesome guy did a cover of it for me because he can sing and I cannot.

So please go give him love.

Lyrics:

Hey there Rose Tyler, what’s it like with Doctor Two?
I’m on adventures with the Ponds,
But, girl, you know I’m missing you; you know I do.
No stars can shine as bright as you.
I swear it’s true.

Hey Martha Jones, I hope you’re happy with your Mickey.
Promise I’ll come visit you as soon as we fix this doohickey
That we’re in. I know you’re happy now with him.
Sounds like you win.

Oh, it’s how you all left me,
Oh, and left me so lonely.
Oh, but now you’re all so free,
Oh, you deserve to be happy.
You can’t have been with me.

Hey Donna Noble, I did everything I could,
You know that forgetting my face, well, it was all for your own good.
This was for you. Everything I did was all for you.
My word is true.

Hey there Jack Harkness, there was much I meant to say.
Never meant to leave you back there,
And if you forgive me then one day, I’ll come for you.
I never meant to be so cruel, leave you so blue.

Oh, it’s how you all left me,
Oh, and left me so lonely.
Oh, but now you’re all so free,
Oh, you deserve to be happy.
You can’t have been with me.

And now hope is like a distant star,
But this blue box can go so far,
And I’d die for you if I had no other way.
I’ve never felt this old before,
My soul is worn, my hearts are sore,
And it’s because of you I feel this way.

Companions, I can promise you
That by the time my life is through,
The universe will never be the same.
Guess I’m to blame.

Hey there Amelia,
Now it’s over, please don’t miss me.
You have Rory here who loves you,
And I’ll be off and changing history, like I do.

You know I did it all for you.
You can do whatever you want to.
Hey there Amelia, here’s to you.
It’s all for you.

Oh, it’s how you all left me,
Oh, and left me so lonely.
Oh, but now you’re all so free,
Oh, you deserve to be happy.
You can’t have been with me.

Let It Go, v. 2 Nimona Ch.10, p.27
By Bear, vocals by serenawitchwriter
My armor looks sad in the lab here tonight
Not a gold plate to be seen
A chess game of pomp and status,
And I’m no longer the Queen.

My hair is tangled like this conflict from inside
Couldn’t keep it straight, you all know I tried

Don’t let him in, don’t let him see
Be the hero the land needs you to be
Just play your part; don’t let him know
Well, now he knows

Let them go, let them go
Can’t keep this up anymore
Let them go, let them go
This did a number on my pores!

I don’t care
If he turns me away
Bring your judgment on:
The joust never favored me anyway

It’s funny how some losses
Make others seem so small
For the cost of my “great” victory
Wasn’t worth his loss at all

It’s time to choose what I must do
To test directions and break rules
What’s right? What’s wrong? What’s left for me?
Mutiny!

Let them go, let them go
I’ll switch to the other side
Let them go, let them go
This is not their time to die

Here I stand
And here I’ll stay
Bring your judgment on

My glory flurries through the air into my spear
My hair is spiraling in split-end tendrils ‘round my ears
And one thought hits me hard like a fwoom canon’s blast
He’ll never take me back,
This won’t undo the past

But let them go, let them go
I’ll prove you all were wrong
Let them go, let them go
I’m no longer your pawn

Here I stand
Not a Knight this day
Bring your judgment on,
I was never champion anyway

Fair Leandra – hornkerling

hornkerling:

Liadan is ten, and her mother is laughing. It’s a loud laugh, even with Da’s shoulder in the way as he spins her around, big hands on her back, big voice filling their kitchen.

Bethany squirms in Liadan’s grasp, kicking at her ankles and glaring when her big sister does not move. Her grip is practiced and one-armed, the other slung more gently about Carver’s sleepier, sturdier shoulders.

Liadan knows what Bethy wants to do. She wants to run to their parents, join in the silly dance. A part of Liadan does, too, but Ma doesn’t laugh well with a big audience, and she worries that if they step too close the tune will stop, and they’ll start worrying again about the new mage lights Bethany makes when she sleeps, and how much flour they have, and whether it’ll last. So Liadan holds her siblings back, and hums along at a distance.

Her father has a hand cupping Leandra’s cheek, his thumb brushing just under her eye, and he’s singing the song he made up—the long one, the silly one with words that don’t quite sit—and Ma joins in with small, breathless snatches. shaking her head as Da sings about how lovely they were, in a place Liadan has never seen.

A damsel possessed of great beauty,
As she stood at her own father’s gate
Oh, the mages there did their duty;
To view them this maiden did wait.
Their gifts were far grander than dancing,
Their enchantments shone like a star.
And as they worked did come advancing,
A fate for the fair Leandra

With their sashes hung o’er their shoulders,
How careless they seemed for to ride.
And warlike appeared this young mage boy
With his glittering staff by his side.
To the Gallows next morning so early
This damsel she went so far
Because she loved him sincerely
Young Malcom fit fair Leandra.

Oh, as she conversed with the mages,
These words she was heard for to say,
“Oh I’ve a heart no one bolder,
To follow my laddie away.”
“Well come, come,” says Malcom, ”be steady
And think of the dangers of war.
An apostate’s life is not the kind one,
Wed me not, fair Leandra.”

“Your parents, you’re bound for to mind them
Or else you are for ever undone.
They will leave you no portion behind them,
So I pray you my company shun.”
Says she, “If you will be true-hearted
I have gold at brother’s in store.
And from now we no more will be parted,
I will be your fair Leandra.”

As he gazed on her beautiful features
Oh, the tears they did fall from each eye.
“I will wed with this beautiful creature
And shun cruel wars,” he did cry.
So now they’re united together,
And think of them where they’re afar,
Maker bless now and for ever,
Young Malcom and fair Leandra.
