Nothing banishes Monday blues like discovering that a decidedly sinister, 100-year-old H. P. Lovecraft poem, entitled “Nemesis,” maps almost perfectly to the 1973 song “Piano Man” by Billy Joel.
If you already know the song, then simply reading the poem below is enough to see that the two really do match. But listening to “Nemesis“ being sung by songwriter and performer Julian Velard as he also plays “Piano Man” is one of the most unsettlingly sublime things the internet has ever produced.
Hey everyone, sorry for the big lull in posting – things got hectic for both me and the Dog Mod with finals and the holidays, and then winter exhaustion sort of set in. I’ve queued up a few posts, and will be working through our inbox over the next few days, so we should be getting back to our regularly scheduled filk shenanigans.
What a vision of darkness, creeps in with desperate sharpness, lecherous grafting of knowledge to my young mortal subconscious.
Words writ by breath of the ancients, wiser than even the pagans, or the wizened old men with wands and white beards that once were ensconced in my pages.
Obfuscated by doom, and laden with arduous tasks are the pathways laid out for the lot of us.
Mages and witches and princes and maids, pages with inches of space for mistakes.
I am the beast, I am the light, I am the blighted being cursed with sight
I am the god who created a world, I am leviathan, the girl
I can do it on my own, but you’re a hero after all, and we may think our sacrifice is just but pride comes right before the fall.
The cascade of rain on my needles, a hand grasping tight to the bottle, of a woman with untapped potential, the ennui of too late and too little.
Our failures have made, a bridge for success, if our game is half played, then who’s played the rest of it?
Heroes we were in a universe doomed, soldiers in battles best left un-exhumed.
I am the beast, I am the light, I am the blighted being cursed with sight
I am the god who created a world, I am leviathan, the girl. And-
I can do it on my own
we can do it on our own
Aut viam inveniam aut faciam (x2)
A new sad space song with lyrics by Nate @astriiformes set to the Thaxted tune from Holst’s ‘Jupiter.” Original post here.
Lyrics:
‘Cross the light-scattered starfields, past the moons of planets large and small
‘Cross the belts filled with asteroids comes a message: do you hear my call?
Though it’s faint, I trust you’re out there
Though it’s small amidst the void
We are bonded by friendship, which cannot be destroyed
I will not cease the signal, I am still awaiting your reply
I do not doubt it’s coming for a moment, sure as comets fly
There are light-years set between us
There are parsecs in the way
But I know that you’re listening, and your words will find the way
I will dream we’re together, I will wish it every time I can
And just maybe, fate will see us once again joining hand in hand
But if space stays vast between us
If we’re star systems apart
Know I’ll keep on transmitting, you’re always in my heart.
And we’re running an Indiegogo campaign to help us do it! Go to the link for all the juicy details! I’ve hashtagged some subjects and fandoms that will appear on the album.
Please help us meet our goal before it ends on December 21.
Sharing our indiegogo campaign again…please check it out/share widely! There’s only one week left!
Oh, and here’s a sneak peek of 3 of the tracks! At the link, you’ll find rough mixes of “Do As Peggy Says,” our ode to Peggy Carter; “Fighting the Black Thing,” inspired by A Wrinkle In Time, and“Orphan Black,” a musical adaptation of the season 5 trailer
Since the world is in dire need of filk for Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom books.
To be sung to the tune of Green Grow the Rushes-O (the weird Christian singalong song, not to be confused with the pretty Robert Burns song of the same name)
Seven Shine the Shiners-O
I’ll sing you one-o,
Seven shine the Shiners-o!
Who is your one-o?
One the folk who wear the crown,
And evermore shall be so.
I’ll sing you two-o,
Seven shine the Shiners-o!
Who is your two-o?
Two, two, the Abhorsen,
Who keep the dead down-o,
One the folk who wear the crown,
And evermore shall be so.
I’ll sing you three-o,
Seven shine the Shiners-o!
Who is your three-o?
Three, three, in stone,
Two, two, the Abhorsen,
Who keep the dead down-o,
One the folk who wear the crown,
And evermore shall be so.
I’ll sing you four-o,
Seven shine the Shiners-o!
Who is your four-o?
Four for the Clayr seers,
Three, three, in stone,
Two, two, the Abhorsen,
Who keep the dead down-o,
One the folk who wear the crown,
And evermore shall be so.
I’ll sing you five-o,
Seven shine the Shiners-o!
Who is your five-o?
Five for the Charters, mortar strong,
Four for the Clayr seers,
Three, three, in stone,
Two, two, the Abhorsen,
Who keep the dead down-o,
One the folk who wear the crown,
And evermore shall be so.
I’ll sing you six-o,
Seven shine the Shiners-o,
Who is your six-o?
Six for the bell that binds the dead,
Five for the Charters, mortar strong,
Four for the Clayr seers,
Three, three, in stone,
Two, two, the Abhorsen,
Who keep the dead down-o,
One the folk who wear the crown,
And evermore shall be so.
I’ll sing you seven-o,
Seven shine the Shiners-o!
Who is your seven-o?
Seven Bright, who made the bells,
Six for the bell that binds the dead,
Five for the Charters, mortar strong,
Four for the Clayr seers,
Three, three, in stone,
Two, two, the Abhorsen,
Who keep the dead down-o,
One the folk who wear the crown,
And evermore shall be so.
I’ll sing you eight-o,
Seven shine the Shiners-o!
Who is your eight-o?
Eight is Yrael who hid away,
Seven Bright, who made the bells,
Six for the bell that binds the dead,
Five for the Charters, mortar strong,
Four for the Clayr seers,
Three, three, in stone,
Two, two, the Abhorsen,
Who keep the dead down-o,
One the folk who wear the crown,
And evermore shall be so.
I’ll sing you nine-o,
Seven shine the Shiners-o!
Who is your nine-o?
Nine is the dark Orannis,
Eight is Yrael who hid away,
Seven Bright, who made the bells,
Six for the bell that binds the dead,
Five for the Charters, mortar strong,
Four for the Clayr seers,
Three, three, in stone,
Two, two, the Abhorsen,
Who keep the dead down-o,
One the folk who wear the crown,
And evermore shall be so.
What do you get when you meet Godzilla and fall in love?
This song is on Kesha’s new album, and a few of our friends told us that it sounded like a Doubleclicks song. When we heard it, we definitely wished we’d written it. So here, in tribute to this fantastic bit of songwriting: Godzilla! It’s a really sweet little song.
