@filkyeahfilk and anyone else who likes space stories

Batya here: I’m pretty sure “Some Kind of Hero” was on one of the first filk collections I ever owned, although not this recording of it.  “Dawson’s Christian,“ on the other hand, is one of those songs that I heard five different parodies of before I ever heard the original.  (My favorites are probably “Dawson’s Mitzvah” and “Crossin’ Myths Some,” a terrible pun of a title for a hilarious crossover fanfic in song.)

Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves – crystalandrock

crystalandrock:

@seananmcguire‘s Wicked Girls is a favorite of mine, and though it’s not explicitly about the lgbt community, for a while I’ve been thinking about it as such. But hey, filk is all about adaptation and the meanings the audience gets from a song – so a few days ago I decided to write my own version.

My Wicked Girls is dedicated to all of the fictional wlw who deserved better than their narratives gave them, and to all the real wlw who deserve the world.

Patriot – Beth Kinderman

Oh no, I can’t believe the things I’m hearing in my voice
As it turns out, if you want power you have to give up every choice
Once I could have kept myself safe on the floor
But my shoes are too tight and I don’t dance anymore
Guess my one chance now is to turn away
And hope you can forgive me someday

This is about Londo Mollari, but I recommend it even if you haven’t watched Babylon 5, because it definitely fits a number of characters. “Patriot,” by Beth Kinderman.  Download here.

Make it So – Annwn

The website claims “No, really, it’s not slash fiction about the decade’s favorite science fiction show. Honest.” but I…I don’t see what else it could be…

Performed by Mark Ungar, Leigh Ann Hussey, and Elton (as far as I can tell, he’s just called Elton)

My Spock – Jackson Lanzing

You can put me down as “always skeptical about nerd rap” but okay okay, “My heart’s like my planet, a black hole of red granite” is a really good line, and both the song and video here are very well done.
“My Spock,” by Jackson Lanzing, to the tune of “My Shot,” from Hamilton, lyrics available here

No Quarter – Cat Faber

hamelin-born:

Ancient legends say the rank a fallen warrior held
Depended on an Honor Guard of foes that one had felled.
And so in tardy tribute to the one we couldn’t save,
We’ll lay your fiery deaths like crimson flowers on her grave.

Some days I just feel like singing this song non-stop.
Hm. On a totally random train of thought – I think Mandalorians might like this song.

The Force Awakens Musical: Rey

So @magickedteacup came and pointed out that she’d written and recorded most of a Star War: The Force Awakens musical-as-fanfiction and WHY DIDN’T I KNOW ABOUT THIS EARLIER IT’S SO GOOD OKAY
You can read and listen to the whole thing here, and I highly recommend that you do – and don’t skip the instrumental “intermission,” it’s actually one of my favorite parts, because apparently surprise highly-abstracted variations of the Imperial March are my jam.  Honestly I listened to that track three times just to hear that quote (or…paraphrase, I guess).
Also, the droid’s got her own theme song.

The Man Dressed in Brown – Eben Brooks

This song works so well I had to get @axonsandsynapses (my regular “has a better memory for music than me” contact) to confirm that it was actually a parody.  It’s based on a version of the Child ballad “The False Knight On The Road,” and it just…works.  Really well.  I love space folk songs.  Especially for Firefly.
