Valdemar’s Song (The Baron and the Minstrel of the Hall) – by Efenwealt Wystle

“So much of life in the SCA is centered around interactions between teachers and students. We all have so much to learn from each other, and none of us has all the answers. Though we all walk different paths on our quests, they all point to the same place. That place is made up of the very best qualities and talents within each of us. Learning to find that and forgive each other’s imperfections is what brings us all closer to our Dream.”

“Valdemar’s Song (The Baron and the Minstrel of the Hall),” by Efenwealt Wystle.  Valdemar, in this case, is an SCA persona, not the Lackey novels.
This song…it’s beautiful, and inspiring, and oddly sad.

Fire in the Glen – Andy M. Stewart

s-a-o-r-s-a:

Fire in the Glen by Andy M. Stewart
R.I.P Andy M. Stewart, 8th September 1952 – 27th December 2015
You will never be forgotten

Considering I found out this singer had passed on from a filk group on facebook, this seems appropriate to post.  Anthony M. Stewart (best known as the singer from Silly Wizard) will always be one of my favorite folksingers.

Wanderer (Hymn to Fen’Harel) – Will Sturman

dog-of-ulthar:

So a while ago I thought “I should write a song about Dragon Age, totally from scratch.”  And a little voice at the back of my mind said “write about Solas” and made this face ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I’m calling this a hymn, but in truth I could just as easily call it “Solas, your head is so far up your ass Varric’s calling it a Deep Roads expedition, please stop.”

Impostor – The Doubleclicks

Feels like I’ve held my breath for hours
And I turn on my eyes to find I’m very far away
I take account of all my wheels, my arm, and my tiny drill
After all my training, I will do nothing familiar today

“Impostor,” by The Doubleclicks
I usually put the chorus or something like that in that fancy indented bit, but…that seems spoilery with this.

All the Birds are Gone – Talis Kimberley

All the birds are gone, and all the stones are shaking;
On and on and on, every day in turn
What will burn, will burn, and they dare to call this ‘needful’
But the birds do not return

“All the Birds are Gone,” by Talis Kimberley
One of the things that most complicates the constant question of “what is filk, anyway?” is that filkers tend to write about things that aren’t typical filk subjects as if they were.  And so you get songs like this one, which sounds like it could be about Mad Max but is really about fracking.

magicalballerinaprincess:

I raised my head, my arms like lead, my heart ablaze once more
The fairy queen looked down at me, shaken to the core
“I’ve played for many centuries, but by the stars above,
You’ve taught me skill is not enough, it can’t compare to love!”

Hello, and happy 1 am! I just finished this after a about a week of work (maybe subtract a day or two). If you don’t know what this is about, it’s Faerie Queen by Heather Alexander! (It’s a super awesome song.) Enjoy!
