“It’s a protest song, a gut-punch of a thing that wanted out. I suspect it’s already growing new verses out there where people are singing it…“
“Leave It,” by Talis Kimberley
For space is wide and good friends are too few.

“Leave It,” by Talis Kimberley
So dress your ranks, lift your pikes
Tight as the teeth of a comb.
Rattling, clanking, down the road
Dressed in leather and steel and woad,
All too aware of history’s load
The War is going home!-
The War is coming home!
Pretty much the ultimate power fantasy for an anarchist SCA nerd, “Serious Steel” by Leslie Fish.
Come from the forest and sit ‘round the fire
Come from the fields and enter our hall
Come drink from the guest-cup
Come join in our circle
Come and be welcome ye bards one and all.
“Come and Be Welcome,” by Em Holbert, sung by Heather Dale
I couldn’t find any original songs by Holbert sung by her, but according to a YouTube comment she’s planning an album for 2016, so that’s something to look forward to.
‘Cause she was not the biggest fighter nor one to raise a fuss
But I remember being proud that she was one of us
And we might never stand together in the shield-wall side by side
But because of her I lift my sword with pride
So Heather Dale recently put out a children’s album, which is basically a “my first filk” compilation, and this song seems to be here to encourage little girls to join the SCA and beat the crap out of people.
…needless to say, I approve
Bring me a star that's fallen from the sky To lay in my lady's hand Stay time in it's flight, Keep tomorrow from this night But time it does fly, and stars do not fall.
“Bring Me A Star,” by Cynthia McQuillen
And Lancelot, his head held highs said
I’ll die in love for Guinevere,
I’d die for love

“Not your father’s nonconformist-stands-tall song – at least, I don’t THINK so….”
I started listening to this fearing it might be hella transphobic, but it turns out it’s just kind of odd and nice, because it is, after all, a nonconformist-stands-tall song, just an unconventional one. Three cheers for Rupert the Swishy!
“The Bow’s Turned Back,” by Heather Alexander. I wish I knew where it was sung.
Incidentally, this is a cheerful sea song. Those are rare. Treasure it.
Love me one more time,
Make this night last forever,
For on the morrow, I leave for battle–
“Tomorrow I Leave For Battle,” by Heather Alexander
Short, sweet, and sad. Lyrics available here
With a black flag dancing overhead,
we’ll salt your beef with flying lead,
and you’ll regret that ever you fed
at the board of Anne Bonney.
A good old-fashioned pirate song by Leigh Ann Hussey and Annwn. Lyrics available here
