Keeper’s Lament – Anne Harlan Prather

I am the daughter of a poor estate.
With no dowry there’s no man who’d have me as wife.
The tower called out so gently to me,
Said a keeper’s oath would set me free.

The years pass by, and the nights and the days,
And the people may change but my works stays the same.
Though I love them well they leave anyway,
While here in the tower alone I stay

“Keeper’s Lament,” by Anne Harlan Prather, based on Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Darkover novels

Song for Petiron – Julia Ecklar & Anne McCaffrey

The tears I feel today
I’ll wait to shed tomorrow,
Though I’ll not sleep this night
Nor find surcease from sorrow.

A short but haunting song, music by Julia Ecklar and lyrics by Anne McCaffrey, taken from her Dragonriders of Pern series.

Chords to this version are available here, but there’s a more recent and arguably MORE haunting version by Tania Opland that I also highly recommend.

Creatures of Dream – Batya the Toon

animatedamerican:

For all of you who have been asking me for a recording of “Creatures of Dream”: BEHOLD.

Released as part of a four-song single, or ~quadringle~, entitled Subversive Ciphers by Jesse Dangerously & Friends.  If you liked my song, you might do well to listen to the others; I feel like it’s in good company.  (Probably of particular interest to some of you will be the first track, which is a tribute to the classic fantasy film Labyrinth.)

Lyrics below the cut.

When the Starcats Come – Kari Maaren

“This song was inspired partly by Sandra Kasturi’s deliberately terrible poem, “Starcats!” (written for ChiZine’s twisted tribute to National Poetry Month, Shitty Poetry Month), and partly by my memories of being bullied and ostracized all through my childhood. If only I had had some Starcats to come rescue me. Ah well. At least I have the satisfaction of knowing that all my bullies likely now have prosperous families and careers, while I live in a box and must reapply for my job every four months! Er, wait…”

“When the Starcats Come,” by Kari Maaren
I love this song because I had a shockingly similar coping mechanism in elementary school, except it involved dragons and sometimes shapeshifting and because I’ve been watching Voltron

Critical Hit – Ghost Mice

midi-fighter:

the biggest baddest beasts have easily been beat with one lucky shot.
dragons have fell and kingdoms have been saved
by people giving everything they’ve got,
by people who never gave up.
by people who know just to let the dice roll and see what comes up.
no we should never ever give up!

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Valdemar – Mark Heiman

Some people were around at the height of Mercedes’ Lackey’s career and read her books as they were coming out.  For the rest of us, with some catching up to do, there’s “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Valdemar, Or The How To Write Your Own Mercedes Lackey Novel Song.”  Necessary background information, since she, Leslie Fish, and Kipling seem to have written 90% of filk.

Written and performed by Mark Heiman, meant to be sung to the tune of your favorite Mercedes Lackey song.

I\'ll Remember – Phil Mills

Once upon a time in this land of imagining
You righted every wrong
You lived for battle song
You stood tall and strong
And I could still the wind or call the rain

“I’ll Remember,” by Phil Mills.  I can’t tell you what this is about, you just have to listen to it.  Saddest song I’ve heard in a long time.
