Wicked Girls Saving Ourselves (illustration) – nokeek/Illustory

seananmcguire:

nokeek:

Dorothy just wanted something that she could believe in,
A gray dustbowl girl in a life she was better off leavin’.
She made her escape, went from gray into green,
And she could have got clear, and she could have got clean,
But she chose to be good and go back to the gray Kansas sky
Where color’s a fable and freedom’s a fairy tale lie.

Alice got lost, and I guess that we really can’t blame her;
They say she got tangled and tied in the lies that became her.
They say she went mad, and she never complained,
For there’s peace of a kind in a life unconstrained.
She gives Cheshire kisses, she’s easy with white rabbit smiles,
And she’ll never be free, but she’s won herself safe for a while.

Susan and Lucy were queens, and they ruled well and proudly.
They honored their land and their lord, rang the bells long and loudly.
They never once asked to return to their lives
To be children and chattel and mothers and wives,
But the land cast them out in a lesson that only one learned;
And one queen said ‘I am not a toy’, and she never returned.

Mandy’s a pirate, and Mia weaves silk shrouds for faeries,
And Deborah will pour you red wine pressed from sweet poisoned berries.
Kate poses riddles and Mary plays tricks,
While Kaia builds towers from brambles and sticks,
And the rules that we live by are simple and clear:
Be wicked and lovely and don’t live in fear

Dorothy, Alice and Wendy and Jane,
Susan and Lucy, we’re calling your names,
All the Lost Girls who came out of the rain
And chose to go back on the shelf.
Tinker Bell says, and I find I agree
You have to break rules if you want to break free.
So do as you like

we’re determined to be
Wicked girls saving ourselves.

For we will be wicked and we will be fair
And they’ll call us such names, and we really won’t care,
So go, tell your Wendys, your Susans, your Janes,
There’s a place they can go if they’re tired of chains,
And our roads may be golden, or broken, or lost,
But we’ll walk on them willingly, knowing the cost

We won’t take our place on the shelves.
It’s better to fly and it’s better to die
Say the wicked girls saving ourselves.

(Seanan McGuire)

This is breathtaking.

Hi! Sorry if this is a stupid question, but do you think poetry could be considered filk too? Because I wanna try writing some filk stuff, but I’m terrible with music, and even changing the lyrics of already existing songs so that it still works with the music seems like a bit too big challenge to me (especially in English, since it’s not my first language), but I can write poems. Not very good poems, I have to admit that, but poems anyway.

Definitely!  I’ve heard a few people read poetry at filk events.  Sometimes it’s a song they don’t feel confident enough to sing but want to share anyway, and sometimes because they found or wrote a very filkish poem that was never intended to be sung.

Go forth!  Write things!!  And there’s always a chance that someone else will be able to set something you write to music later!

Quick update

Hey everyone, sorry for the big lull in posting – things got hectic for both me and the Dog Mod with finals and the holidays, and then winter exhaustion sort of set in. I’ve queued up a few posts, and will be working through our inbox over the next few days, so we should be getting back to our regularly scheduled filk shenanigans.

Love,

The Brain Mod

Erin and Rand’s filk album

As you may know, my husband and I are working on an album together. I’ve already shared our Indiegogo link once, but I wanted to take a moment to highlight a really special fundraising perk.

In 2013, we were invited to be the Filk Waifs (Toastmasters) at FilKONtario and our dear friend @seananmcguire agreed to write our bio for the program book.

Of course, if you know Seanan at all, you’ve already guessed that what she supplied was no ordinary bio: she wrote an original short story, casting the two of us as characters. That story has only appeared in the program book, until now!

Campaign pledges of $30 or more get you a digital copy of that bio/story! And that’s not all the Seanan you’ll find on this project!

One of the tracks is a parody of Seanan’s song “Dear Gina,” with lyrics by me and @meravhoffman. The song imagines that October Day has gained sentience outside book world, realizes that Seanan is the one doing all of these horrible things to her, and threatens revenge. 😀

(Additionally, Seanan is going to supply us with some vocal tracks!)

I hope you’ll click the link and find out more about our project!

And we’re running an Indiegogo campaign to help us do it! Go to the link for all the juicy details! I’ve hashtagged some subjects and fandoms that will appear on the album.

Please help us meet our goal before it ends on December 21.

Check this out, filk fans!

Leslie Hudson House Concert 10/29 in Jersey City

meravhoffman:

Leslie Hudson is appearing live at my house. If you’re local, please RSVP to the Facebook event so we can put out enough chairs.

Please feel free to boost this to local filkers and your local music loving friends.

Details are here: https://www.facebook.com/events/299205620596549/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%223%22%2C%22ref_newsfeed_story_type%22%3A%22regular%22%2C%22feed_story_type%22%3A%22361%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22null%22%7D sorry for the horrid link!

Do you have a copy of the 1985 Off Centaur Publications cassette, “Murder, Mystery, & Mayhem – Songs By Mercedes Lackey”? I am interested in that cassette due to the fact that Mercedes Lackey’s 1987 CD of the same name from Firebird Arts and Music has completely different people singing the songs, and some of them have new (odd) musical arrangements as well. Just asking!

Brain mod, here: Me and the Dog mod don’t have a copy, unfortunately – we got into filk after cassettes ceased being the popular medium for music, and we don’t have a tape player, so there’s been no reason for us to collect any.

@animatedamerican, what about you? Or anyone who follows us?

It’s a good day to stock up on some Alexander James Adams!
https://alexanderjamesadams1.bandcamp.com/

I just noticed we got 25 NEW FOLLOWERS in the past WEEK which is huge for a pretty small blog, especially considering…we haven’t posted much at all recently.  So welcome, I’ve loaded the queue for a while in all of your honor, here’s hoping we can keep it up!
Feel free to bother us with “why haven’t you posted x yet” or “do you know any songs about y!”  Sometimes we need to be poked.

Filk Stream This Sunday!!

dog-of-ulthar:

scribefindegil:

Hey friends! A few of my wild Life Things have calmed down and also I have at least temporarily won my battle with technology, so I’m going to get back to having regular virtual folksings again!
For those not familiar, I stream myself singing folk and filk songs. Everyone is welcome to listen, make requests, and sing along! I work primarily from Rise Up Singing and Rise Again for folk songs (songlists here and here). My filk collection is a little more eclectic–lots of Leslie Fish and Julia Ecklar as well as some of my own stuff. If you have something you want to hear and aren’t sure if I know it, drop me a message! Given enough notice, I can probably learn it.
I’m planning to start this Sunday, July 9th, at 2pm and go until my voice and/or fingers give out.

(that’s 2pm central time, for the record)
