Hi! My names Rachel and I grew up in the Chicago-land filk community. It really warms my heart seeing a blog dedicated to the music. Especially since a lot of the musicians are personal friends. So thank you for existing :)

I’m so glad!  And kind of sorry I haven’t posted…anything in a while.  Recently anything that takes a lot of googling has seemed unreasonably difficult, and using my spare time to watch three seasons of Inuyasha has seemed like a good idea.

BUT I’ve got a few submissions in my inbox, and it’s about time I got off my ass and started Generating Actual Content for once, so maybe I’ll start existing for real again soon >.>

Ahh! I still can’t get over that I wrote a song!

I spent all of my childhood trying to create even a chorus to a song before finally admitting I wasn’t musically inclined at all in terms of creating music.

Then I just wake up today with a tune in my head, the lyrics came next and bam! a song! Like the past 20+ years of struggling to write music never happened. Like it’s not a great song or anything but it’s still recognizably a song! Improvement!

I love filk music, I love folk music, I love all music, I love the people who introduced me to filk music like @filkyeahfilk, @aroford, @scribefindegil! I love Cipher Hunters and I love this hunt so much!

I am in love (platonically of course) with the universe right now and I hope everyone is having a great day!

Under the Gripping Beast & Into the Fire aesthetic

For a journal bound in leather fine, as soft as human skin, a gripping beast embossed thereon, and all the world therein

…There on her empty pillow lay, and god knows what within, a journal bound in leather fine, as soft as human skin.

it’s not really a hiatus, but only because I’m in denial

I’ve taken an internship that’s going to eat basically all of my time for the next ten weeks, so this blog is going to update even more sporadically than usual.  It’s not dead, though!  I’m still here!

So if people feel like submitting songs they’ve found, or coming to me like “psst hey have you heard of this person, they’re super cool,” please do, it’ll be even more appreciated than usual because you’ll be the only thing keeping this blog going unless I somehow discover the missing 25th hour of the day.

can you help me with finding filk albums that would have been released before 1980? it's for. um. research

Research, you say?  Interesting….

…so the only ones I know off the top of my head are Folk Songs For Folk’s Who Ain’t Even Been Yet and Solar Sailors, both Fish albums; according to fanlore they were the first commercially released filk albums (1976 and 1977, respectively).  They were re-released together as Folk Songs for Solar Sailors, and if you don’t have that already, I highly recommend it.

But I’ve said several times, I’m not really qualified to run this blog, and if you want more knowledgeable people who know more than two things, you should go bother @animatedamerican or maybe @sci-fantasy

what-the-fuck-is-homestuck:

This is Robert J! Lake, one of the dudes that made Homestuck what it is today. RJ made a whole boatload of songs for 16 Homestuck albums. Do you know how much Homestuck that is? A whole great lot. He composed my favorite Homestuck song, Softly, and deserves way more out of his hard work than what he is getting right now. If you enjoy Homestuck, its music, or all of the effort that was put into making it what it is, please consider giving back to someone who helped shaped it into something that means a whole lot to a whole lot of people.

what is the "real life" tag for? i'm not sure why you tag some posts that way.

It’s…a nebulous concept that I only just started using.  I keep ending up with songs about politics, or social anxiety, or marriage, or cats that I can’t put in the typical broad “science fiction” and “fantasy” categories, so I’m calling them real life.

They’re very inconsistently tagged right now, so I can see why there would be confusion.
